Registry Mechanic Review Does Registry Mechanic Work?

Our Registry Mechanic Review:

Official Score: 85%

Registry Mechanic is made by the software company PC Tools, creators of several different computer maintenance titles. PC Tools is a reputable software company and their software tends to get advertised quite a bit, so we are reviewing their registry software to help you make an informed decision.

We performed our tests on regular Windows computers that have been in use by our editors at their homes and offices.

Registry Mechanic Specifications: Registry Mechanic Review

Publisher

Registry Mechanic is published by PC Tools software. PC Tools has been around for a while and is generally considered a good software publisher, although recently their programs have been getting a bit too bloated for their own good. Complaints that they are system hogs are being heard more and more.

Operating Systems

Registry Mechanic is certified to work with all versions of Windows, including XP, XP Pro, NT, 2000, 98 and 95. It is also Vista certified.

Features

  • Enhanced Scanning And Detection - offers a "Deep Scan" feature
  • System Optimizer - Tools to help improve the overall performance of your computer
  • Backup And Restore - creates backups automatically for each repair session

Download And Installation

You can only get Registry Mechanic by downloading it from the internet. You can do so from several websites, including the PC Tools official site. The downloadable version is free and allows you to scan your PC, but you must purchase the program to use all the features.

The download file is small, and installation is smooth.

Interface

The interface of Registry Mechanic is colorful and easy to read. It's easy to navigate your way around, however sometimes it's a bit difficult to find what you're looking for at first.

The Scan

Registry Mechanic's scan is good, however it tended to find fewer errors than other leading programs. It runs fast, however, and the deep scan is intriguing (although we're not sure how this works or whether or not it's doing something special.)

Scan results are listed clearly and users are able to easily page through the result files and decide whether to keep them in the remove queue or spare them and keep them in the registry. This is good for more advanced users. Most of the time you'll want to delete all the results.

Other Features

There are several other useful features in Registry Mechanic. The registry compactor is a nice touch, however it really doesn't do a whole lot, and doesn't make much more than a few megabytes of difference. This is very small especially with today's computer hardware. There is also a startup manager that helps you to limit the programs that load when Windows boots up.

Registry Mechanic does have a lot of bells and whistles, but in the end we weren't sure that most of them were necessary. Many are already available in Windows by pressing "ctrl alt delete" and opening the task manager.

Conclusions Registry Mechanic Review

Overall Registry Mechanic is definitely one of the top registry cleaners. However, there were a few things that we found a bit annoying. The program tends to be a slight memory hog, which might be problematic for those with older/slower computers. We also didn't like the fact that Registry Mechanic likes to run in the background. This is not necessary for a registry cleaner, which really only needs to be used once a week at most.

Although Registry Mechanic does the job, we found it was just trying to be a bit too much. Those with slower computers might find that it's just too hard to deal with because it will suck up resources.

While Registry Mechanic is a good program, we still would recommend that users get ParetoLogic's RegCure instead. (Click Here For Our RegCure Review.) It's a more dedicated program that seems to find more errors than Registry Mechanic.
